UK Strengthens Maritime Security Ties in Southeast Asia, Announces Diplomatic Mission Reopening in Timor-Leste

Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, is embarking on a visit to Southeast Asia with a primary focus on enhancing maritime security and reinforcing the UK's global diplomatic network. During her stay in the region from February 29 to March 4, Minister Trevelyan aims to underscore the UK's commitments to maritime security and unveil plans to reopen a permanent diplomatic mission in Timor-Leste.

In her keynote speech at the Regional Maritime Security Symposium in Bali, Minister Trevelyan emphasized the global threats to maritime security and outlined the UK's strategies to address these challenges. The visit is part of the UK's broader commitment to collaborate with maritime nations in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Minister Trevelyan's trip commenced with a visit to Indonesia from February 28 to 29, marking the third UK ministerial visit within the last twelve months as the two nations celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The Minister highlighted the UK's dedication to building stronger long-term partnerships in the Indo-Pacific to support maritime and economic security.

On March 1, during her visit to Timor-Leste, Minister Trevelyan, alongside Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, announced the UK's intention to reopen a permanent diplomatic mission in Dili, the Timorese capital. This decision reflects the UK's existing commitments to assist Timor-Leste's development, including backing its accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The announcement aligns with the UK's efforts to safeguard long-term global security and prosperity by sharing expertise, enhancing maritime resilience, and expanding diplomatic presence in strategic regions.

British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Dominic Jermey, emphasized the commitment to strengthening partnerships with Indonesia and supporting maritime and regional security. He expressed pride in the decision to reopen a permanent presence in Timor-Leste, recognizing the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The Bali Regional Maritime Security Symposium, funded by the UK government, is a week-long event (26 Feb-1 March 2024) aimed at fostering collaboration in various areas, including maritime law, domain awareness, port security, and climate security. The symposium involves participants from ASEAN governments and observer nations such as the US, Australia, Japan, Canada, and France.

Minister Trevelyan will conclude her Southeast Asia visit with a trip to Cambodia from March 2 to 4, engaging with government officials, non-governmental organizations, British businesses, and promoting recently launched UK educational institutions in the country.
