The United Kingdom has announced an additional £5 million in funding for the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) to provide non-lethal support to the Somali Security Forces (SSF) in their fight against the extremist group al-Shabaab. This contribution reinforces the UK's commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the SSF to ensure the safety and security of Somalia and the wider region.

The UNSOS Trust Fund, administered by UNSOS, plays a vital role in providing non-lethal logistical support to the SSF, including essential resources such as rations, tents, and medical evacuation assistance. Currently, the Trust Fund supports 14,900 Somali National Army and 1,000 Somali National Police forces, with the goal of increasing support to 18,900 SSF with contributions from countries like the UK.

This continued support aims to not only aid in counter-terrorism efforts against al-Shabaab but also facilitate the development of SSF capabilities through logistical support, including fuel, rations, and materials for forward operating bases. It also includes providing communications equipment to enhance operational readiness and effectiveness.

Enhancing the capabilities of the SSF is a crucial aspect of Somalia's ongoing security transition process, with the UK remaining a steadfast supporter of this process and Somalia's fight against terrorism. British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, highlighted the importance of this funding in supporting Somali Security Forces' efforts to defeat extremist groups and restore stability in the region.

The Commander of the Somalia National Army, Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin, also welcomed the UK's contribution, emphasizing its significance during the transition period.

Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of UNSOS, expressed gratitude for the UK's continued support, highlighting its impact on bolstering the capabilities of the Somali Security Forces and its role in supporting Somalia's stability and security.

This funding follows a previous contribution of £5 million in December 2023, and since 2022, the UK has provided over £20 million in voluntary contributions to support UNSOS in creating a safer Somalia.
