Sweden Takes Steps to Join European Public Prosecutor's Office for Stronger Cross-Border Crime Enforcement

The Swedish government is moving forward with plans to join the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in an effort to enhance law enforcement and combat cross-border crime. The decision, which requires amendments to Swedish legislation, aims to improve cooperation in fighting various financial crimes such as fraud, money laundering, corruption, and bribery that affect the European Union's financial interests.

The EPPO's jurisdiction also covers certain cross-border tax offenses involving VAT with damages exceeding EUR 10 million. To facilitate Sweden's participation, the government will introduce a new act defining the status and powers of prosecutors within the Swedish legal system and amend existing laws to grant European prosecutors access to relevant national databases. The legislative changes are expected to take effect in 2024.
