Racing for Health or Chasing Wealth: A Personal Journey from Delhi to Amaravati

Author – Pankaj Belwariar, SRM University Amaravati, AP

In the bustling corporate world of Delhi, the race for career growth and financial stability consumed my life for 25 years. I dedicated myself to climbing the corporate ladder, striving for senior positions and benefits that often seemed just out of reach. Amid this relentless pursuit, I never truly acknowledged the toxic air I was breathing or the toll it was taking on my health. My decision to relocate to Amaravati, the burgeoning new capital of Andhra Pradesh, brought about a transformative change. This vibrant city is being modernized with a focus on sustainability, yet it retains its rural charm. The atmosphere is markedly different.

SRM University AP campus and my home here are enveloped by picturesque villages, majestic mountains, and serene water bodies—all contributing to a refreshing and health-oriented environment. The air quality in Amaravati stands in stark contrast to that of Delhi. The capital's Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi often hovers between 350 to 500, categorizing it as extremely poor. Comparatively, Amaravati boasts an AQI that ranges from 25 to 50, indicating fresh, clean air that supports a healthier lifestyle. Returning to Delhi for holidays now feels challenging. Each trip serves as a stark reminder of the city's air toxicity and its impact on my well-being. It becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the discomfort of breathing in polluted air, making me question whether I can ever return to a place that has been so integral to my life for half of my existence.

This personal transition has sparked a deeper reflection on the fundamental question that many face: Is life about chasing good health and happiness, or is it about pursuing a career and financial success at the expense of our well-being? The realities of corporate life often lead us to equate success with relentless ambition, sometimes overlooking the importance of a healthy living environment. We must ask ourselves—are the sacrifices worth it? The balance between a prosperous career and a healthy lifestyle is delicate, yet vital. As I embrace the serene lifestyle in Amaravati, I begin to realize that true success encapsulates not just professional achievements but also the vitality to enjoy life. Life is indeed a race, but it should be a race towards well-being and happiness rather than a frantic chase for titles and wealth. In a world where the pressure to succeed often overshadows our instincts to nurture our health, it is essential to reevaluate our priorities. Ultimately, prioritizing health and happiness may pave the way to a more fulfilling life—a lesson learned from my journey from the toxic air of Delhi to the rejuvenating embrace of Amaravati.
