Denmark's Landmark Security Pact with Ukraine: A Decade of Unwavering Support

Denmark has become the first Nordic country to enter a historic agreement with Ukraine on security cooperation and long-term support, marking a significant milestone in international efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russia's aggression. The ten-year security commitments, backed by Denmark's strong positions, encompass military and civilian support, focusing on key areas such as F-16 combat aircraft, the reconstruction of Mykolaiv, and assistance in Ukraine's reform endeavors.

The security commitments, funded by the Danish Ukraine Fund until 2028, amount to approximately EUR 9.3 billion, reinforcing Denmark's dedication to providing sustained assistance. Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized the political pledge, ensuring Denmark's enduring support for Ukraine and sending a clear message that Ukraine is not alone in its defense against Russia's full-scale war of aggression.

Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted that Denmark is translating its commitment into action, expressing solidarity with Ukraine's fight for freedom. The long-term military support encompasses continued donations of military equipment, training, and closer cooperation in critical areas like cyber and intelligence.

The security commitments serve as a vital bridge towards Ukraine's prospective EU and NATO membership. To align with this trajectory, Ukraine commits to implementing essential reforms, including measures to promote democracy, anti-corruption, and democratic control of security and defense forces.

The agreement incorporates a consultation mechanism to be activated in the event of a future Russian armed attack against Ukraine. In such a scenario, countries supporting the G7 initiative for security commitments to Ukraine, including Denmark, will consider countermeasures promptly.

The G7-led initiative, joined by 32 countries and the EU, aims to fortify Ukraine against Russian aggression. Denmark's landmark agreement follows similar bilateral commitments from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, underscoring the collaborative international effort to strengthen Ukraine's resilience and safeguard its future.
